Friday Big 12 Baseball Six-Pack: TCU Takes Down UCLA While Texas Tech Breaks a School Record for Runs Heartland College Sports – An Independent Big 12 Today Blog | College Football News

Heartland College Sports – An Independent Big 12 Today Blog

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Friday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

#5 TCU vs #20 UCLA

We had a top 25 showdown in Fort Worth on Friday night as the Frogs took on the Bruins. TCU got the party started with a two-run shot by Kurtis Byrne and then Anthony Silva added another score as well. The Frogs were up by three runs before UCLA got two on the board to make it a one run game.

However, Brody Green’s solo homer in the fifth is what helped TCU separate before their bullpen shut things down.

It was quite the battle on Friday, and I am excited to see these two teams go back at it on Saturday.

Best Win

Kansas over Texas State

It’s not often that Kansas gets the credit they deserve but I wanted to shine the spotlight on them here. Sure, TCU beat a top 25 team, but I thought it was very important for the Jayhawks to get off on the right foot in the Karbach Round Rock Classic.

Jake English had a big day as he drove in three runs for Kansas and Reese Dutton had a great day on the mound pitching five full innings and giving up just one earned run. Texas State is likely going to be a postseason team this year and anytime you can get a quality win over a postseason team you take it.

Worst Loss

BYU

While the Cougars took care of business on Thursday, they followed that up with a disappointing loss on Friday out in California. Starting pitcher Cutter Clawson struggled in the fourth inning as he gave up five runs. Meanwhile, BYU didn’t have enough offense to get going in this one as they fell 6-2 to UC Davis.

Friday MVP

Texas Tech 1B Landon Stripling

It’s not often you see a player with 7 RBIs in a game, but Landon Stripling managed to do just that against Texas Southern. Landon knocked in a run in the third inning before hitting a three-run bomb in the fourth.

Then in the very next inning, he went yard again.

His final RBI came in the seventh inning where he hit a single. Texas Tech ended up scoring 32 runs on Friday which broke a school record.

Pitcher of the Day

Texas RHP Lebarron Johnson Jr.

There were a few great pitching performances on Friday, but nobody was better than Lebarron Johnson Jr. He pitched eight full innings against Cal Poly and didn’t give up a single run. In fact, he only gave up two hits and managed to strike out eight batters.

Best Home Run

Kansas Catcher Jake English

After making an appearance here last weekend, Jake once again comes away with the best home run of the day. Kansas was up by two against Texas State before Jake went yard in the bottom of the third inning. His home run helped Kansas take down a solid Texas State team in Round Rock.
