The life of a Texas Tech Red Raider fan has been pretty sweet over the last calendar year.

Players like Patrick Mahomes, Mac McClung, Josh Jung, Ludvig Aberg, and many more finding unprecedented success at the professional level bodes an essential question in Lubbock: is this the golden age of Texas Tech athletics?

While back-to-back Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes‘ career alone is enough to prompt the question, Texas Tech has fielded champions in multiple professional sports during 2023-24.

Ludvig Aberg, a former Texas Tech golf team member, started things off in September by taking home the 2023 Ryder Cup alongside his teammates on Team Europe. Then, two days later, former third baseman for the Red Raiders Josh Jung took home a World Series title as a member of the Texas Rangers. Jung finished the 2023 season with a batting average of .266 while recording 23 home runs and 70 RBIs.

The coalition of showstopping former Red Raiders continued into the 2024 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, where internet sensation Mac McClung took home his second-straight victory. McClung was an integral piece of Texas Tech’s National Championship run in 2020-21, averaging 15.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.

While it’s tough to decipher what all this success among Texas Tech athletes relates to at the professional level, one thing remains true: this is without question the golden age in Lubbock.
