Kansas Takes Down TCU and Texas Tech Evens the Series Against Texas

Heartland College Sports – An Independent Big 12 Today Blog

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Saturday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

UCF at Oklahoma

Due to some harsh weather on Friday, UCF traveled to Norman to play a doubleheader on Saturday against Oklahoma. The first game was a close one from start to finish and was my pick to be the best game of the day in the Big 12. Anthony Mackenzie got the Sooners on the board first, but the Knights answered right back with a run of their own.

UCF would go on to take the lead in the sixth inning, but Jackson Nicklaus would tie the game up in the same inning. And in this crazy game, UCF recaptured the lead once again thanks to Matt Prevesk.

The Sooners would tie the game in the seventh and eventually took the lead when Michael Snyder brought in the winning run.

Best Win

Kansas over #3 TCU

How about the Kansas Jayhawks? After taking game one on Friday night, they come back on Saturday and not only take game two but the series as well. TCU went into the fifth inning with a 2-1 lead before the Kansas bats woke up.

The Jayhawks put two on the board when John Nett and Kodey Shojinaga came up with a pair of clutch hits.

Kansas would end up breaking the game wide open in the sixth inning where they put up three runs thanks to homers from Michael Brooks and Janson Reeder.

Lenny Ashby was the man who put the cherry on top with his two-run blast to help Kansas take the game and the series. It was the first top five series win for Kansas in 14 years and may be the biggest upset in college baseball this weekend.

Worst Loss

The Bears dropped game one on Friday night against Houston and then got shutout 8-0 on Saturday. Baylor posted a .161 batting average against the Cougars and had trouble getting anything going offensively. Now they will need to win on Sunday to avoid the sweep.

Saturday MVP

Texas Tech C Dylan Maxey

The Red Raider catcher had a big day against Texas. He knocked in a run in the second inning before hitting a two-run bomb in the fourth inning.

Pitcher of the Day

Houston LHP Antoine Jean

Antoine pitched a little over five innings against Baylor and managed to strike out 11 batters and didn’t allow a single run.

Best Home Run

Kansas RF Lenny Ashby

Lenny’s home run helped put the icing on the cake for Kansas in their big series win over TCU.
