Saturday Big 12 Baseball Six-Pack: TCU Makes Another Comeback

Heartland College Sports – An Independent Big 12 Today Blog

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Saturday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

#5 TCU vs Florida Gulf Coast

For the second night in a row, TCU comes away with the best game award. The Horned Frogs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before the Eagles put up a four spot in the third inning to take the lead. Florida Gulf Coast would follow that up with a big fifth inning that saw them score five more runs and had a comfortable 10-4 lead going into the sixth.

But anytime you play TCU, no lead is safe. Chase Brunson hit a two-run blast in the sixth to pull TCU within four. Just two innings later, the Horned Frogs went on a tear as they scored a whopping seven runs and went on to win 13-10. This was due in large part to a pair of homers by Kurtis Byrne and Payton Tolle. If you didn’t believe in Lupton magic before, you should start believing now.

Best Win

Oklahoma over #9 Tennessee

Anytime you can beat a Top Ten team in the country you earn my respect and that is exactly what Oklahoma did on Saturday. The Sooners are participating in the Shiners Children’s College Showdown in Arlington and took on Tennessee in their second game of the year.

This game was kind of a dud due to each team just scoring a single run in the first nine innings. However, the Sooners bats woke up in extras as they were able to put up four runs thanks to John Spikerman and Rocco Garza-Gongora coming up with clutch hits.

Oklahoma ended up winning the game 5-1 for their first victory of the season.

Worst Loss

Kansas to UIC

Once again, the Kansas Jayhawks finds themselves on the naughty list as they fell for the second day in a row to UIC (University of Illinois Chicago). After giving up 11 runs on Friday, they followed that up by giving up 13 runs on Saturday. I know that the Jayhawks have the bats to be competitive, but they have had a brutal start to the season on the mound in their first two games. Now they have to win on Sunday to avoid an ugly sweep.

Saturday MVP

TCU 2B Peyton Chatagnier

Peyton had a great game on Saturday and played a huge role in TCU’s epic win. In the first inning, he went deep before hitting another solo blast in the fourth.

Pitcher of the Day

Oklahoma State RHP Brian Holiday

Brian took the mound on Saturday against Sam Houston and was fantastic. He pitched six full innings and allowed just two hits against a really good line up. Unfortunately, his team wasn’t able to capitalize on his great performance as Oklahoma State fell short 2-1.

Best Home Run

TCU DH Payton Tolle

Payton hit a three-run bomb to give his team the lead in the eighth inning and his homer was the icing on the cake for TCU.
