TCU No. 1 Despite Series Loss to KU

Heartland College Sports – An Independent Big 12 Today Blog

The first weekend of Big 12 play is in the books for the 2024 college baseball season and we have another big week ahead.

There were some surprising results in Week 1 of league play, but it’s best never to draw conclusions about a team after one series. With that being said, here are my Big 12 baseball power rankings after a wild first weekend.

1. TCU

While the Horned Frogs dropped their series against Kansas in the first two games, they did bounce back on Sunday with a big win. I still believe they are the best team in the conference and bounce back next weekend.

2. Texas

After a rough weekend in Houston a week ago, Texas went into Lubbock and took two out of three games against Texas Tech. I don’t care who you are, that is no easy task because Lubbock is a tough place for opposing teams. Maybe Texas needed a wake up call before this series and it worked.

3. Texas Tech

Despite falling to Texas, I still have a lot of faith in this team. The offense will be there, but they need to sure up their pitching and be more consistent on the mound if they want to stay a top contender in the Big 12 race.

4. Oklahoma

If you doubted this team coming in, now is the time to buy in. Oklahoma absolutely crushed a red-hot UCF team and swept them. I wouldn’t want to play this team right now and I would sure keep an eye on them moving forward.

5. Kansas State

After falling out of the top 25 a couple of weeks ago, Kansas State had a nice series win over Cincinnati. They won an absolute thriller on Sunday, and if you don’t know, this team can crush the ball.

6. Kansas

One could argue that Kansas is too low on my list, and that’s fair. They pulled off a major upset series win against a top-five TCU team, and I believe they have what it takes to compete in the Big 12. If they can follow this up with another big series win, I will officially be bought in.

7. Oklahoma State

This is nothing against Oklahoma State, but they have yet to really wow me outside of that Arkansas game a few weeks back. I want to see more of them, and I am excited to see what they can do once they start Big 12 play next weekend.

8. UCF

I thought that UCF would win the Oklahoma series, and instead, they got swept. Now, I will be curious to see how they can bounce back after a rough weekend in Norman.

9. Houston

The Cougars had a great weekend after sweeping Baylor. Houston got their first Big 12 series win and this could be another team to keep an eye on because they have some series talent.

10. West Virginia

Where is JJ Wetherholt? While West Virginia did beat BYU this past weekend, they need their superstar to come back sooner rather than later. I just wonder if there’s any update on his status this week.

11. Cincinnati

While they did give Kansas State a run for their money, they have some serious flaws. Pitching is going to be an issue but at least they can put up some runs of their own.

12. BYU

Even after their series against West Virginia, I am still not sure what to make of this BYU team. While they did lose, they did show some flashes but we are going to find out more about them as the weeks go on.

13. Baylor

Not much to say here but I am waiting for this team to get some momentum. It has been a rough start to the year and it’s not going to get any easier in Big 12 play.
