Texas Loses Thriller to Texas State While Texas Tech Stays Hot

Heartland College Sports – An Independent Big 12 Today Blog

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Saturday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

#15 Texas vs Texas State

This was an instant classic down in Houston. Texas found themselves down by six runs in the second inning, and things weren’t looking great. However, the Longhorns slowly started their comeback in the third inning thanks to a throwing error and a sac-fly by Kimble Schuessler.

Texas would pull within two when Jalin Flores and Max Belyeu hit solo shots in the fifth inning. And in the seventh inning, Texas took their first lead of the game as Jack O’Dowd hit a monster three-run blast.

The Bobcats would answer back in the eighth inning to tie the game, but Porter Brown put Texas back on top with his solo jack.

Unfortunately for Texas, Texas State had the last laugh Aaron Lugo hit a clutch two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning that helped them win the game.

Best Win

#18 Texas Tech over Gardner-Webb

I know the opponent isn’t great, but when you put up 29 runs in a game, you have my attention. This happened just a week after the Red Raiders broke a school record for runs and then they go out and score thirteen runs in the second inning alone. On top of that, starting pitcher Mac Heuer was lights out on the mound as well.

Worst Loss

West Virginia

The Mountaineers dropped game two of their doubleheader against Western Kentucky on Saturday. In that game, they gave up four runs in the first inning and had to play catch-up the entire time. While West Virginia did make a late push in the ninth inning, they couldn’t entirely complete the comeback.

Saturday MVP

Texas Tech 1B Gavin Kash

You will see some absurd stat lines when your team scores 29 runs in a game. Gavin started his day with a two-run bomb in the second inning and followed that up with a two-run double in the same inning which is crazy. He also knocked in two more in the fourth to make it a six RBI day for the Texas Tech first baseman.

Pitcher of the Day

Oklahoma State RHP Brian Holiday

After putting on an impressive performance last weekend and earning himself the pitcher of the day award, Brian Holiday once again comes up big. Against Central Michigan, he pitched eight complete innings and allowed just three hits. Brian gave up just a single run on the day and struck out nine batters.

Best Home Run

Kansas State RF Nick English

Anyone who knows me knows that I love a good grand slam and not the one from Denny’s. On Saturday, Nick English hit a grand slam against UMass Lowell in the eighth inning to seal the deal for Kansas State.
