Texas Takes Down Texas Tech While Kansas State Wins a Thriller Over Cincinnati

Heartland College Sports – An Independent Big 12 Today Blog

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Sunday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

Cincinnati at Kansas State

I know it’s the month for March Madness on the hardwood, but this game felt like March Madness on the diamond. It was a back-and-forth type of game and eventually Cincinnati was up 11-7 going into the bottom of the eighth inning.

At this point, I thought Kansas State was done and I was dead wrong. Instead, they put up three runs on the board to pull themselves within one going into the ninth.

In bottom of the ninth inning, down by one, Kyan Lodice hit a homer to tie the game and send it to extras.

In extras, neither team scored in the first two innings. Then in the twelfth inning Kameron Guidry gave Cincinnati the lead with his two-run shot.

That lead wouldn’t last long because Brendan Jones answered with his own two-run blast before Nick English walked it off with his game winner.

Best Win

#24 Texas over #17 Texas Tech

With the series tied at one, we got to see a rubber match in Lubbock on Sunday. At one point, Texas found themselves down 6-3 going into the fifth inning. But in that inning, the Longhorns woke up at the plate. Peyton Powell hit a solo shot to pull Texas withing two before he came up with another clutch hit to put his team in front.

Peyton also hit a sac-fly for an added insurance run in the seventh. Thanks to his bat, Texas was able to score in key moments and his team ended up winning 9-7 and taking the series.

Worst Loss

Sunday was just another rough day for the Knights as they were swept by the Sooners. This game wasn’t even close as Oklahoma put up 14 runs and run ruled them in the seventh inning. It was a complete letdown for UCF because they came into this weekend on fire and left Norman ice cold.

Sunday MVP

Oklahoma Catcher Easton Carmichael

Easton saved his best performance of the weekend for Sunday as he went off against UCF. He drove in a run in the third inning and then drove in another in the sixth. But he was just getting warmed up because he hit a three-run blast in the seventh inning to win the game for Oklahoma.

Pitcher of the Day

Houston RHP Duncan Howard

Duncan had a great day on the mound against Baylor as he went six full innings and allowed just a single run. He also struck out five batters and played a crucial role in Houston’s sweep over Baylor on Sunday.

Best Home Run

Kansas State CF Brendan Jones

Brendan’s two-run homer in the twelve-inning helped Kansas State tie the game against Cincinnati and they eventually won. That wouldn’t have been possible without this home run from Brendan Jones.
