It will be until August when Joey McGuire and Texas Tech football will take the field again, but the former Red Raiders are making the leap to the next level in May. Last month’s NFL Draft saw Tyree Wilson taken seventh overall by the Las Vegas Raiders, but he’s not alone in chasing his NFL dreams. Five other Red Raiders signed undrafted free agents or were invited to mini rookie camps this year.
The main attraction was, of course, Wilson. He had been at the top of the draft boards since the middle of Tech’s 2022 season. He is the highest Red Raider defenseman ever drafted and is tied for second in school history with Donny Anderson in 1965. Even Patrick Mahomes and Michael Crabtree were not that high in their respective drafts.
Wilson joins one of the best defensive lines in the league with veterans Chandler Jones and Maxx Crosby. Still, your help is needed after the Raiders finished 24th in team pass rush win rate, according to ESPN.. With his size and brute strength, the sky seems the limit for him. Having the chance to learn from veterans Crosby and Jones will do nothing but benefit Wilson and the defense.
While several Red Raiders are entering the NFL in 2023, Wilson was the only draftee. The rest of those players had to wait until the third day to get a call from a team. Fortunately, some well-known names will have the opportunity to make a list.

All it takes is a phone call from any team to make a player go all out. That's the challenge five other Red Raiders are facing this summer. After the draft, each team brings undrafted free agents to their mini rookie camps to see who they want back on the field in July, when the real fun begins at boot camp.
n
The first Tech alum to get a call was kicker Trey Wolff, who is moving to the Tennessee Titans. All Red Raider fans remember about him from last year was his tendency to land hard shots. Wolff was on 21 of 25 field goal attempts, including two game-winners to beat Texas and Oklahoma in overtime. He also almost scored an extra point.
n
n
Caleb Shudak is the only other kicker on the Titans' roster. He also came in as an undrafted free agent last season, but only kicked in one game. Randy Bullock was the team's starter last season, but Tennessee didn't relinquish him. This opens the door for a new beginner to emerge. Could be Wolff. If he finds his rhythm in training camp, the Titans could have a consistent kick.
n
Marquis “Muddy” Waters signed with the New York Jets, who are entering a new era with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback. His senior season was a successful comeback at Tech after suffering a season-ending injury in 2021.
n
n
With no clear starter at the safety point for New York, Waters could at least fight his way into the team's practice squad. Chuck Clark, Will Parks, and Jordan Whitehead are late high school veteran leaders, but they are by no means household names. If Waters can bring the same intensity he brought at Tech over the past two years, he could find his way up the Jets' depth chart.
n
The New Orleans Saints signed not one, but two Red Raiders. SaRodorick Thompson and Adrian Frye will tackle the Big Easy together looking to be part of the team. The two arrived at Tech in the same class and brought energy to the program, now can they do that in the NFL?
n
Thompson got big breaks after college, appearing in both the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl and the Senior Bowl. While he didn't produce big numbers in any of those games, scouts and general managers took notice. Thompson will learn from one of the best quarterbacks in the league, Alvin Kamara, but as of right now, he's buried in the depth chart.
n
The Saints signed Jamaal Williams, who ran for 1,000 yards last year, and drafted Kendre Miller from TCU. Eno Benjamin has been in the NFL for four years and looks to be the third-string option.
n
Unfortunately, NFL training camps are a numbers game, and right now the numbers aren't looking good for Thompson. However, coaches, coaches and fans alike know what he's capable of, being the consistent runner with speed and power we've seen in recent seasons. u00a0 But Saints coaches also need to see that on the field for the former two-star recruit to make the roster.
n
For Adrian Frye, he only came as an invitation to a minicamp, but that didn't last long. After trying out several players, the Saints officially signed him as an undrafted free agent. With Frye officially heading to camp, he'll have a chance to measure up to one of the best quarterbacks in the game.
n
n
That, of course, is Marshon Lattimore. He will also join ten-year veteran Bradley Roby in secondary school. With New Orleans looking for key depth in the corner, the odds could be looking up for Frye. The biggest concern is whether he can take his game to a higher level than he did during his later years at Tech. Frye burst onto the Lubbock scene as a freshman with five interceptions in 2018, but only had two more for the rest of his collegiate career. Consistency is key to making it to the NFL and Frye needs to find that at camp this summer.

Texas Tech defensive lineman Gabe Oladipo stretches before Pro Day, Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at the Sports Performance Center.

When you ask most people at Tech what Gabe Oladipo did, they might say athletics. While that's true, the former pitcher is trying his luck in the NFL. Oladipo may be the most unlikely Red Raider of that group to receive an invite to an NFL camp, but the Pittsburgh Steelers did just that.
n
n
The Steelers took a chance on Oladipo despite the fact that he didn't play a single college football play. While playing high school football at Fort Bend Hightower, Oladipo decided to take up athletics at the next level. He was successful for three years in Wes Kittley's track program, but joined the football team last season.
n
He received an exemption from the NCAA for an extra year of eligibility and spent most of his only year with the program on the scouting team. McGuire and the coaches praised him, prompting the Steelers to fly over the big prospect.
n
Its size is enough to pique interest, but trying to make an NFL team when you haven't played football since high school is a tall order. The rookie minicamp for Pittsburgh ended a few days ago, and so far, no news has been reported on Oladipo's signing. That likely means the Steelers backed out of signing him simply due to his lack of college ball experience.
n
Despite this, Oladipo could sign with another team before camps start in July and be given another chance. The odds, however, are not in his favor. Still, piquing the interest of an NFL team when you haven't played a single loss in college is an accomplishment. Hopefully, Oladipo will gain interest from other clubs due to the Steelers' experience.
n
Official training camp rosters will be announced later in mid-July, but the future looks bright for Wilson and the other Red Raiders looking to make a roster. Joey McGuire is still continuing to build his program and getting more tech players into the NFL after just their freshman year is a good start. Young recruits and even current players on the show have faces to look up to.
