The Texas Tech Lady Raiders snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 74-60 win over the Houston Cougars in the first round of the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Tournament at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City on Thursday.

The Lady Raiders (17-15) will now face Baylor at 11 a.m. Friday in the second round. Texas Tech assured itself of a winning season with the victory and remained in contention for an invitation to the Women’s NIT for the second straight season.

Houston (14-16) wrapped up its first Big 12 season with its fifth loss in in its last six games.

At one point Texas Tech was 16-6 after a Jan. 27 win over TCU. After that, the Lady Raiders struggled, thanks in part to injuries. Five different players missed at least eight games this season, many of them during Big 12 action.

Jasmine Shavers made sure the Lady Raiders advanced to play at least one more game. She had a game-high 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting, including four 3-pointers. She helped Texas Tech score 27 points in the third quarter and give them a double-digit lead.

Houston, led by Payton McFarland’s 14 points, put together a run early in the fourth quarter that helped cut the Texas Tech lead to six points. But the Cougars couldn’t sustain it and the Lady Raiders pulled away.

Laila Blair added 11 points for Houston.

Jordyn Merritt scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Texas Tech, while Bailey Maupin added 10 points.
